For 9 years running, Bear Mountain Ski Resort has hosted an annual pre-season handrail competition highlighting some amazingly talented skiers and snowboarders performing tricks that are pretty impressive, sometimes even awe-inspiring! On September 21, 2013 this tradition will continue in the form of the 10th Annual Hot Dawgs and Handrails winter kick off party! Entrance to the event is FREE  and you get plenty of entertainment, this year's competition will boast 40 skiers and snowboarders from across the country jibbing on 130 tons of ice that will be chipped into snow.

I realize that these types of competitions are not high on the list of social events for everyone out there BUT there is one very compelling reason to attend, even for those not interested in freestyle skiing and snowboarding. That reason, is to save money on season passes! For those who visit the season pass office at Bear Mountain Ski Resort from 9am - 6pm on the day of the event there are significant savings to be had, ranging from around 11% - 15% depending on the pass you buy. For a family of three purchasing Anytime Dual Mountain Passes, this could equate to $250.00 - $280.00 in savings!

Click the link below to view a schedule of prices for various types of passes. Make sure to refer to the pricing on or before May 31, 2012 or the HDHR One Day Only Price, not the current date, as these are roll-back prices.

Saving money is a great excuse for a drive up to Big Bear to enjoy the last of the beautiful summer weather, so come on up and get away from it all for a weekend!

Happy Trails in Big Bear

There are many wonderful hiking and biking trails in the Big Bear valley and I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy many of them. No matter how often I have visited these various trails, I find that I am continually struck with their beauty.  Since last fall, it has been my great pleasure to become involved, in a small way, with an effort to build a brand new trail, one that I count amongst the most beautiful that our valley has to offer.

The new Skyline Trail runs parallel to the upper portion of forest road 2N10. It is fairly close to the road but maintains a distance adequate to feel the quite comfort of being away from it all. What is remarkable about this trail is the sheer beauty of the view.

Picture
The scene that unfolds before the eyes overtakes the mind in all its pull towards continual forward momentum and practically wills the viewer to simply stop, and take it all in. The bright blue sky and fresh air, the miles upon miles of trees,  the snow capped San Gorgonio mountains and a forest teeming with life and vitality that it imbues into the viewer.

As you can tell, I am completely taken in by this wonderful new trail. My only complaint is that my experience of the trail has been limited by its incomplete state. Of the 15 miles that will eventually comprise the trail, there are a mere 3 miles that have been fully completed. The  Big Bear Trails Foundation, the organization responsible for this beautiful trail, has worked hard to obtain funding as well as a volunteer work force to put in much needed “sweat equity”.

Please consider joining in on the effort to work towards completing this trail by lending your time to it. The Big Bear Trails Foundation has scheduled trail build days twice a month on the 3rd Sunday and the Wednesday that proceeds it. The work is light and the company is top notch! "Nature Walks" Into the Spirit

Recently I took advantage of a warm spring day and joined in on a Nature Walk at the Big Bear Discovery Center. The naturalist that lead the tour, Joe, was a fountain of knowledge and at the beginning of the tour jokingly said that there would be a quiz at the end. Memories of school days must have scared my mind into sharp attention because I retained more information than I expected. Here is a bit that I can pass on to you, although I reserve the right to blame any false information on rusty test taking skills.

  • Yellow Rabbitbrush or Chrysothamnus Viscidiflorous (ok, I looked up the scientific name but I promise the rest is all from memory) is so named because it is one of the only plants that rabbits won’t eat!
  • If you smell the bark of a Jeffrey pine when it has been warmed by the sun, the aroma of vanilla will greet you. Now during hikes I sniff the bark of trees, I feel silly but I can’t stop!
  • The San Bernardino mountains have an estimated population of 350 - 400 California black bears and has no grizzly bears. California grizzly bears did once roam our valley but the last of them were killed off long ago, at which point the California black bear was introduced into the area.
  • The bats that inhabit our valley are “microbats” and feed primarily on insects, thus making themselves invaluable to those of us humans that aren’t fond of insects!
  • The bright green lichen that is seen on dead branches throughout the forest is a combination of algae and fungus. (See the picture above)
  • Manzanita means “little apple” in Spanish. The small red berries that grow on Manzanita bushes are edible, but I was assured that they definitely don’t taste like apples.
I promise I learned and retained a lot more but since I am out of space you will just have to get over to the Discovery Center and go on a tour. Happy Trails!

Amazing Things Happen in the Light of the Full Moon

One of the aspects of real estate that I enjoy most is working with buyers. It is a really gratifying experience to learn to understand a person or family’s needs and tastes, and in the meantime to get to know them, not as clients, but as people. There is a feeling  of excitement for me when I am previewing houses for a particular buyer and I walk into a home that I know they will love, I can’t wait to share it with them! There is a feeling of happiness when we are walking through houses together and start to relax the business formalities and share stories and laughs that are personal and fun, they may not seem pertinent to the task of buying a home but they are to me, they give that task context and meaning.

The reason I am rambling on about how much I love working with buyers in a blog post that is just as much for sellers is because I’m trying to add some of that same meaning and context. I would like to begin to share some things that are important or meaningful or funny to me, just as I would with buyers.

My story this time involves the moon and my six year old daughter. This past month my daughter and I were driving and caught a glimpse of the rising moon and she really wanted to take a picture of it. Later that evening we got out the camera and tripod, bundled up, and journeyed all the way to the street in front of our house. As we adjusted the camera settings and took various shots we both became more and more excited at the results. I snapped a good shot and as the image flashed onto the viewfinder, her eyes, face and whole being lit up with a smile as bright as a moonbeam. That moment and the look on her face is burned into my memory, who needs to stop and smell the roses when you have the moon and stars.
